Smart Home Building Systems Ltd. Introduce
Introduction / Overview
When it comes to protecting your home in Alberta, a province known for its extreme weather, selecting the right roofing contractor is a decision of paramount importance. Smart Home Building Systems Ltd., based in Edmonton, has established itself as a notable player in the local market, offering a range of services that go beyond simple roof installations. They are particularly recognized for their expertise in handling complex projects, including the increasingly popular metal roof replacements, and for their skill in navigating the intricate process of insurance claims. For many residents, especially those who have experienced damage from recent hailstorms, this particular feature is a significant advantage. The company is often praised for their professionalism and their commitment to working closely with both the homeowner and the insurance provider to ensure a fair and accurate estimate for all necessary repairs. This thorough, collaborative approach helps to maximize the claim and ensures that all aspects of the damage are addressed, leaving no stone unturned. While some customer feedback points to challenges with communication and scheduling, particularly during high-demand periods following major weather events, it is clear that the company's dedication to the final quality of the work and their proactive collaboration with insurance companies are key reasons why many Albertans choose their services. They aim to provide comprehensive solutions that not only fix the immediate issue but also offer long-term benefits like increased durability and energy efficiency, as noted by a client who experienced a cooler home after a metal roof installation.
Location and Accessibility
Smart Home Building Systems Ltd. is conveniently located at 17704 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 1P7, Canada. This address is situated in a key industrial and commercial area of Edmonton, providing excellent accessibility for their operations. The location on 118 Avenue NW, a major east-west artery in the city, allows for efficient travel to various parts of Edmonton and the wider region. For their crews, this means they can quickly mobilize to job sites, whether they are in residential neighbourhoods or at commercial properties across the city. This strategic positioning is particularly vital in a large city like Edmonton, where quick response times are often necessary for both emergency repairs and for keeping projects on schedule. For clients, while the address serves as their operational base, the nature of their business means they primarily come to you. Their accessibility is therefore measured more by their ability to serve a wide geographic area effectively and their proactive communication when scheduling on-site visits. The proximity to major roads and highways also allows for smooth logistics, including the delivery and storage of materials for larger projects, like the extra space required for a metal roof installation, a detail they communicate clearly to their clients upfront.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Smart home was great to deal with. They came to my house showed me the best product and warranties. They started out strong. The roof was done in no time. Then I realized the company had no sub contractors of their own. The soffit Facia and eves were to be done. My calls and concerns were brushed aside. Water came off the roof leaving tons of ice at every door. They kept telling me it’s hard to find trades. Then when they found a company to start the Facia and eves, the left extreme amounts of garbage, nails all over our driveway and door ways. I called smart home, nothing was done. I had to clean up every day, or I would be paying for tires to be fixed. One employee for smart home is Brad. He was called and text. He usually never answered. So I stop calling hem and called Joe. Finally the job was done. They all did a professional job. But the stress they put me through was unacceptable.
May 21, 2025 · Randy MonuikOverall, we’re very pleased with the work done on our new metal roof replacement.Smart Homes was the only company that actively collaborated with our insurance provider to maximize our claim. Their thoroughness and professionalism were exactly why we chose them.Unlike other companies that simply based their quotes on what the insurance would pay, Smart Homes worked closely with both us and the insurer to ensure a fair and accurate estimate for all the necessary repairs. They took lots of pictures to document the work completed. The only reason we gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that communication could have been better. We experienced some miscommunication that led to crews showing up when we were not there and needing access to the inside. Lack of communication causing errors leading to extra work, but these issues were addressed. We understand this was likely due to the high demand following Calgary’s recent hailstorm, which stretched crews and resources thin.In the end, we have a beautiful metal roof and here are a few things to note:Installation takes longer than a shingle roof and requires more space to store materials. The team communicated this clearly upfront and worked with us to maintain access to our garage throughout the project.Since installation, we’ve had several heavy rain and hailstorms. Surprisingly, the metal roof is much quieter than shingles—there’s less noise from wind, hail, and rain, making it very pleasant inside. The runoff seems heavier, and while it’s hard to say if our gutters are fully keeping up yet, we’re monitoring the situation. An unexpected bonus: we haven’t needed to turn on our air conditioning since the new roof went up. Whether it’s due to the roofing material, improved ventilation, or both, our home stays noticeably cooler than in previous summers. We’ll continue observing this benefit over time.
Jul 21, 2025 · R. WageMy experience with SmartHome began in September 2024 and ended in May 2025 — a frustrating journey that ended only after I demanded a refund of my $6,000 deposit. Despite promises and multiple site visits, no work was ever completed on my home.My main points of contact were:- Colin, the estimator who first quoted the job- Brad, the installation manager who visited my home- Scott, the project manager who handled scheduling and communicationLike the other reviewer, things started off well:Sept 2024: Colin visited promptly, gave what seemed like a fair quote, and assured me the job would likely be done before year-end. I paid the full $6,000 deposit that day and the work order was created.Nov 2024: Brad visited my home twice to assess materials. I also asked for a quote on additional projects (garage, deck, fence), which Brad said he'd send the following Monday. I never received it.Dec 2024: I followed up for an update. Scott replied that I was in the next queue for material orders, likely in January.Jan 2025: I followed up again, letting them know I planned to sell my home in the spring. I asked for a target date — and got no response.April 2025: I asked once more for a date. Scott responded: “I’m sorry but it looks like it was passed over for some reason.” No explanation for the delay, and no actual progress followed. He then said work would begin that week and Brad would stop by again. This would have been Brad’s third site visit. I asked why another visit was needed — no response. At this point, I sent a formal demand: work must begin in May and be completed by June 1, or I would cancel the contract due to non-performance.Then things got worse:May 1, 2025: Colin left a voicemail saying materials had been ordered.May 2, 2025: Colin emailed confirming work would begin Monday, May 5 at 8:00 a.m.May 5, 2025: By 9:30 a.m., no crew had shown up. I emailed to cancel and requested a refund. Scott responded by asking to meet in person — which I couldn’t do due to work. Then he emailed again asking, “Can you please clarify exactly what work you want completed? What is the total amount you have agreed to pay with Colin?”At that point, it was clear: they claimed to have ordered materials without even knowing the scope of work. I had completely lost trust in their process, coordination, and transparency. The only positive in this entire process was Sharka, the staff member who processed my refund. She was honest, efficient, and professional — everything the rest of the experience wasn’t.I don’t write 1-star reviews lightly, but this one is earned. I hope my experience helps others make a more informed decision.
Jun 18, 2025 · Amanda LeeWe used Smart Home for all of our exterior repairs from the hail storm and were very happy with the work they did. Brad ensured that the work was completed to our satisfaction and was very easy to work with. A special thanks to Sean and his assistant who did the vinyl siding. They worked through some extremely cold weather and still produced a very high quality end product. We were also completely satisfied with the roofing and eavestroughs replacements. All in all we're very happy we chose Smart Home and would highly recommend them to others needing exterior work done on their homes!!
Mar 25, 2025 · Rick BrownleeI loved working with Joe and the entire SmartHome team for my metal roof. I am a very particular person and care significantly about the fine details of a job. Joe was very patient and accommodating with my preferences and put a level of care and detail into my home as if he owned it himself. I was thoroughly impressed with the initial planning process and was even more impressed with the actual execution of the job. The team was effective, efficient, and showed great attention to detail throughout the entire process. Well worth the investment of a metal roof and you can’t go wrong with Joe and the SmartHome team. I’ll never have to buy another metal roof again on this house because of the longevity of the product but if I ever need another roof on a future property, I’ll definitely be coming back to SmartHome! Well done and thank you for the incredible job!
